Oroville Internet User Group From Our Meetings |
1. Do I have to
be connected to the Internet to write an email?
No - with most email programs you may click work off line or cancel
if it tries to connect you to the Internet.
2. Why am I always
getting diconnected after I open Outlook Express?
You probably have a box labeled Hang Up after sending and receiving
email checked.
Open Outlook Express, click on Tools then select Options.
Click on the Connections tab.
If there is check in the box labeled Hang Up after sending and
receiving, click on the check to remove it.
3. What is the difference
betgween username, email address and POP account name?
Your username is your logon name to ChoiceNet. It is usually short
like nurse, steve, or smith. It tells the computer (authentication
server) who you are and allows you to access the Internet.
Your email address is how mail finds its way to you across
the internet. It usually starts with your username like nurse@cncnet.com,
steve@cncnet.com, or smith@cncnet.com. It identifies you and the
Internet service you are using, so the Internet mailman can find
you.
Your POP account is the name of the email server (the computer
that handles mail) that has your email address stored on it and
will route your mail to you. For our earlier customers it will
be just your username. For our more recent customers it will be
longer like nurse.cncnet, steve.cncnet, or smith.cncnet.
4. My compouter
locks up and I can't get my mouse to click on anything. What can
I do?
There are a number of things that may cause this. First if you
are using Win98 or ME, log onto the internet. Then click on your
start button on the lower left side, and select "Windows
Update" it is near the top of the list. This will take you
to Microsoft's website. Now select the "Produce Update"
link, this will take awhile, but when you get there you will have
a change to update your software, as it may be needed. If there
are critical updates needed there will be check already marked,
just click on the blue download arrow, then you will need to repeat
this on the download now arrow. After that everything is pretty
much automated, just follow the instructions. You may want to
return to this site now and then and check of updates.
WHEN YOU PC IS LOCKED UP. Try holding down the "ctrl"
and "alt" keys and then click the "Delete"
key. This may bring up a window that will list all the programs
running in the background, if one of them says "not responding"
click on it once and then click on the button called "end
task". Wait a bit and on the button called "close"
in the new window that should appear.
If nothing works and you cannot do anything - turn off the computer.
Wait about 20 second and then turn it back on. You will see blue
screen telling you that you shut the computer off wrong, don't
worry about it. Then try and update your files. If you see the
same program saying "not responding" all the time you
may want to remove it and re-load it if your really need it.
5. What is the function
of "BackWeb"?
This is a program that was and I guess still is used by some software
company to assist you in keeping their software up to date on
your computer. It will look at the company's current version and
if yours is older will notify your or just update things, depending
on how it loaded. It is not used as much today as a couple of
years ago.
6. Define "Cookie"
and its function?
It aint something you eat, darn. It is nothing more than a bit
of information that is stored by someone on your computer. It
is normally used to identify you to that company when you go to
there website, there equipment will place the information on your
computer the first time you visit. Then when you go back they
will know you where there before and know what you did, purchased,
or information you may have completed on line for them. In most
case the cookies today do not have important information about
you, only an assigned reference for their database to use to pull-up
information about you. There are other uses for cookies but this
is the most common today.
